Sunni Mahal Federation was established in 1976 with the intention of forming a platform for the office-bearers of mahals and to coordinate their activities. It was also aimed at making dars education more effective and to fight the moral degeneration in mahals. The idea of SMF originated in the discussions of M M Basheer Musaliyar, C H Hydrose Musaliyar and U Bapputty Haji during the regional meeting of Samastha, which was held in Chemmad. The idea had the blessings of Sufi saint Chappanangadi Bappu Musaliyar, who presided over the inaugural meeting. Shamsul Ulama E K Aboobacker Musaliyar announced the formation of SMF at the public meeting. The first committee that came into being was the Tirur committee that includes eight panchayats in Tirur panchayats.
